First, the negative: this book is strangely unedited. We have several essays and magnificent photos. But how about a bit of biography of Rulfo? (From one of the essays we glean that there were thousands of photos and only six years before his death did Rulfo release them. He did not think of himself as a photographer.) Who are the essayists? Only one is well known to this reader. There is a section of photos of the filming of "La Escondida." How about telling us something about this movie?! And we would like some kudos for the translator, the sort of thing an introductory essay by an editor might have accomplished. The lead essay by Carlos Fuentes (taking top billing because he is famous) is a bit diaphanous. Several essays point to the relationship between Rulfo's classic novel, Pedro Paramo, and his photography. The best is by Eduardo Rivero; the essay by Victor Jimenez is also enormously helpful and insightful.Juan Rulfo is a fascinating figure. Pedro Paramo is a difficult book; his stories are also not easy to read and understand. But, having been able to linger over these magnificent photographs, I now want to return to the writing. A modest man, Rulfo's production is also modest. And at the same time enormous.
