Too High to Die: Meet the Meat Puppets Details
Review "It's a very strange, wonderful experience to read...I love the way itflows...a linear time capsule compendium of the band's past...so manyperspectives tied together so well. I feel like I've been hanging out in these scenes just yesterday." -Curt Kirkwood, Meat Puppetssinger/guitarist"It was moving to read, to see other people'stakes on it. I really dig the living f**k out of it. It's cool as f**k." -Cris Kirkwood, Meat Puppets bassist"Greg's retrospective justhelps bring everything just that much more full circle. Well done, sir." -Derrick Bostrom, original Meat Puppets drummer"Mr. Prato's'Too High to Die' is an excellent book, that gets all the great rock n'rollers' perspectives on why they/we all love the Meat Puppets so much.I've read it 2 times from front to end, and I'm going on my 3rd read aswe speak. Everything you ever needed or wanted to know about the Pups."-Shandon Sahm, current Meat Puppets drummer"Greg Prato takes anin depth look into the deeply fried psychedelic scriptures of these most essential southwestern country-punk cowboys, leaving no desert stoneunturned in telling the saga of the Kirkwood Bros luminescent journey, from the early days at SST to Nirvana and beyond. Weird scenes insidethe goldmine, indeed..." -Lee Ranaldo, Sonic Youth guitarist"The title of this book is a little deceptive, as it's about far more thanjust the extraordinarily underrated underground rock band the MeatPuppets. It, like 'American Hardcore' and 'Our Band Could Be Your Life,' helps add to the mythos surrounding the formation of the American rockunderground in the late 1970s, through the early 1990s." -JeremiahGriffey, geekexchange.com"Prato has not only nailed down thestory of the Puppets perfectly, but that whole SST Records crew who sawPunk as a wide open world of gelatinous freedom and not just a haircut." -Tony Rettman, Vice Magazine"The very first official, definitive bio on The Meat Puppets ever written. Engaging, honest andintimate...and often just plain hilarious...it's a must read." -ShirleyPena, The Los Angeles Beat"Interviewing dozens of key players, including the band members themselves as well as producers, othermusicians, friends and record company people, the author stitchestogether an illuminating look at the mighty Meats." -Steven Rosen,CurledUp.com"Employing what seems like some massive interviews,Prato looks at the Meat Puppets by framing the book in a chronologicalstarting from when the Kirkwood brothers were children and runningthrough to the present, documenting the trials and tribulations of theband and their personal lives." -Bob Morgan, Scenepointblank.com"The new book, Too High to Die: Meet the Meat Puppets, is a comprehensiveoral history of the band's career, assembled by Rolling Stone writerGreg Prato." -Rolling Stone"'Too High To Die: Meet The MeatPuppets' is one of the most adventurous and ultimately satisfyingliterary journeys about rock 'n' roll that I've ever experienced. I'mreally hoping that a film adaptation is in the works...." -The ImpalerSpeaks (theimpalerspeaks.com) Read more

Reviews
I have recently "re-discovered" the Meat Puppets. I now own all of their material and devoured "Too High to Die, Meet the Meat Puppets". This band should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for so many reasons. This book was a great read; at the time that I started the book I only owned about half of the Meat Puppets available releases, but as I got into the book I ended up purchasing all of the Meat Puppets material that I didn't already own.... Buy all the Meat Puppets you can get your hands on, and read this book because it will give you a respect for the band that you might not have had previously.
